The Daily Life of Ancient Mesopotamia
Mesopotamia, an ancient land where you grew from tribes to cities states, working together to get the resources that you needed for life. The flat
marshy land provided resources some of which could be reused. There were lots of food and land to build homes. Transportation, like wagons pulled
by horses were used for trading. Often times cities and states were at war for power over the land.
The land was fertile, wide and had rivers. The land was fertile which means that it was rich with life and the soil was nice and moist. The land was
wide which means that they had plenty of room. They also had lots of rivers. Two main rivers were called the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers. These
rivers were helpful because you could use the for irrigating the crops.
Mesopotamians ate lots of food. Some of the main foods they ate were barley, wheat, bread, apples, and herbs. Barley is a type of grain made into
a cereal that was real hard. Wheat is a type a grain. Bread is something made out of flour, water, and yeast mixed together and then baked. Apples
are a type of fruit. Herbs are any type of plant that has leaves, seeds, or flowers. Sometimes they would have to move because the weather was
changing and they needed different soil. They settled in between rivers. The reason they settled in between rivers was because there was enough
water and the animals would drink and they could easily get food from planted crops. Also, when they settled by the rivers they could tell where they
were at because of the river flow. When they settled they would have to make sure that there was materials to make mudbricks for homes.
The first thing that the homes were made of was sand and for the roof they were either made out of straw or loam. Then the Mesopotamians
thought of something better to build there homes out of because they wanted to make their homes stronger. They took mud and started sunbake
mudbricks. They let the mudbricks dry in the sun so then it would get hard. When their homes they would have to make sure that there was enough
land resources.
Some of the ways that they used their land was by growing crops. First they had to make sure the land was good enough so that they could dig to
put the seeds in the ground and water them. Another way they used their land was by getting materials for homes. They could use the river clay for
the mud bricks. One more way they could use the land was by using the land for homes. In their homes they needed enough room so they could put
extra resources.
Mesopotamians traveled by wheels, horses, and on their feet. Wheels were made out of clay, rock, and mud. They had chariots and horses that
would pull them. The last way they traveled was by feet. While they were traveling along the way they would trade with other tribes. They traded with
all these places because the other tribes had other resources that did not have at the time, cities. Five of the main things they traded were timber,
metals, stones, wine, and oils. Also the same for the metals and stones. Wine and oils were things that they would trade for food and other drinks.
When they were going to war they had to make sure that there was enough food to eat so that they would not starve.
